Last Night 20/12/2014

Tonight's Standard Radio was an xmas guest take over, as a crew of DJs and producers lined up to help us end the year in the customary style. Our own Standard Crew's Major Grave and BOB along with Glacial Sound, Bobo-Funk, Section-Five and RDA rolled out a heap of exclusives amongst the favourites from the last year, and of course the odd classic as per standard.

I'd like to send a personal thank you to all who've listened and given us their support, whether by accident or design, and whether on FM in Dublin City or elsewhere via the wonders of the real time stream. Big thanks to BOB for keeping the turntables turning in my absence, to Major Grave for keeping the fire burning, everyone at Raidió Na Life for tolerating our weekly pilgrimage up the steps to the studio.

- Colz

Last Night 29/11/2014

Joining Bob in the studio a fortnight back for Standard Radio were fellow Standard crew member Major Grave, and guest Glacial Sound.

Bob steps up first for the opening 30 minutes, then its over to Glacial Sound with plenty of unreleased bits taking the mix in all kinda directions.
Next up is Major Grave with a set made up entirely of his own unreleased productions. To finish, Glacial hopped back on the decks, with Bob covering for the last one.

If you would like to keep up to date with all things Glacial Sound, head over to their soundcloud, or you can stop by the online Glacial Sound shop here.

Thanks again to the listeners, and to our special guest this week for dropping by.

'This week joining me for a  guest mix on the show was Entropy from Limerick's DIE crew. I only managed to catch half of his set down at this years Life Festival, so I thought it was only right that we got him in for a full mix. He has very kindly put a set together for us just under the 1 hour mark, and we hope you enjoy hearing whats inside...'

DJ Zinc - Trust Me I Was There - Chapter 13 - 1992 (Part 1 )

"....This is the 13th chapter in a series of mixes called 'Trust Me I Was There' - tracks that were big in clubs and on pirate radio where i was - East London mainly - but in '92 this sound was taking over the country.

1992 holds a special place for a lot of people and its pretty clear why when you check the music that was around that year - previously there had been house influences but now the music was almost all made in the UK, all breakbeats baselines and samples, it sounded like a new and totally different music - the kind of thing that your parents say 'what the hell is that, its not proper music'...

Another aspect of the music round this time is that the bpm of the music started speeding up - I'll do these 1992 mixes in rough bpm order so the speed doesn't jump around too much, and as with the other mixes no triple drop acrobatics, just simple mixing.

Thanks for all the messages about this mix series, such a pleasure to share the music :D

More fire from Moony as the two step/4x4 two tracker 'Heavy/Heavy VIP' is available to buy now from his Bandcamp. Perfect swing in this stepper.

Another one floating my musical boat this month is from the man Bok Bok - twisting the funk and boogie through the MPC mangler to construct some 8 bar uniqueness.

DJ Zinc - Trust Me I Was There - Chapter 11 - 1991 (Part 3)

"...This is part 11 in a series of mixes called 'Trust Me I Was There' - the tracks that were big in the clubs I was going to and the London pirates I was listening to at the time.

In 91 the music was morphing from the previous Housier/US sound to a more UK vibe, with basslines and breakbeats shaping the sound. As a punter/DJ back then, I had really liked the earlier music in these mixes, but from this point I felt like i was part of a scene that was largely people like me, in areas like where i lived - I was well and truly hooked!....

DJ Zinc - Trust Me I Was There - Chapter 10 - 1991 (Part 2)

"...This is chapter 10 in my series of mixes called 'Trust Me I Was There' - this one is pt 2 from 1991. As I said in the last one, you can really hear the sound changing, more breakbeats and to my ears a more bedroom studio sound.
Included in this mix are tracks from Doc Scott, Shades of Rhythm, Shut Up And Dance and Blame, to name a few....

DJ Zinc - Trust Me I Was There - Chapter 9 - 1991 (Part One)

"...This is the 9th chapter in my 'Trust Me I Was There' series - this is the part 1 from 1991.

91 was the year I started on pirate radio with my DJ partner Swift (not Mampi Swift btw, a different one!) we were on Impact FM and our first show was the first time I'd touched a pair of technics - till then i'd been using decks without pitch, or if I was lucky, some Soundlabs. The studio mixer was an MRT 60, futuristic business at the time :D

Swift and I did 4 hours every sat night and 4 hours sunday night, plus any cover shows we could do. keen...

Music wise - 91 was a real turning point, you can really hear the UK sound starting to take off, most tracks had a breakbeat instead of the 4/4 kick that had been more common before and it sounds like the samplers were getting used in the studio more and more - for me, the music up to this point was great, but from 1991 it just becomes exceptional. The golden era of the Jungle sound has now begun :D...

Frankie Knuckles at Power House Club, 1986 Opening Night

So much has been said elsewhere this week; for me, this video says it all.

As a B-boy back in the '80's, I knew the resistance many felt to this music (oftentimes a second hand received opinion from the 'real music' brigade, the remnants of the 'anti-disco' years, and the covert homophobia of Hip Hop) as it began its encroachment into our lives. As a kid in school buying those first records that slowly dripped in from Chicago, those first tracks that were licensed to be sold in Europe, I along with my friends would study the sleevenotes, the names, read accounts of what was happening in Chicago (and starting to happen to the previously rare groove clubs across the Irish sea), and could only dream of what was to come. So, it's been a loss this week - but let's not forget the legacy. It's great to see so many people who weren't even born when these records were first heard paying their respects in recognition of the contribution Frankie Knuckles made to so many of our lives.

Rest In Peace.

After 10 years on London's Kiss FM, Logan Sama has left the building.

Here's his set from earlier in the week at The Boiler Room (London) - dubplates aplenty.

DJ Q - Trust Again (Major Grave Remix)

Big up our own Major Grave on his remix of DJ Q's 'Trust Again' (featuring Louise Williams on vocals - the original can be heard here) - in my humble and unbiased opinion, his is the stand-out remix on this, the latest release (vinyl only!) on Local Action.

You can hear his remix here, along with an interview with the man himself DJ Q - keep an ear out also for Ineffable, the album is available on vinyl too so great news for DJ's and quality music lovers everywhere.

More Major

Last Night 01/03/2014

Here's last weekend's show, first of the month and (we hope) coinciding with a switch up in the weather - DJ Bob brings you some favourite skunk scented 12"'s on this one, to ease you gently into the mercifully longer days, and shorter nights. Fire one up.

Thanks again to the listeners.

DJ Zinc - Trust Me I Was There - Chapter 8 - 1990 Part 3

Finishing off the 1990 segment of this essential mix series, Zinc brings us forward as things got just a little more hardcore, and the Akai S series became as essential as the Roland rhythm machines, and the UK began to assert its own musical roots on the sounds of '80's Chicago and Detroit, beckoning in what was to come as things got that little bit 'ravier'....

"...this is part 8 of a series of mixes called 'Trust Me I Was There' - this one is part 3 of 3 from 1990...

..this mix includes the first release on Reinforced, a couple of tracks that DJ Hype was involved in, some classic Warp (LFO!!!!) the massive 'Mr Kirks Nightmare' and one of my all time favs - Radio Babylon..."
