1984

I just had to thieve this one from true-schoolers Cheebah when I saw it today; some of you will be familiar with the footage from RTE's 'Reeling In The Years' series - hence the odd soundtrack. 1984 was the year when I, and everyone I knew, got serious about b-boying - for some reason hip hop became a vital force for many of us born in the 70s, thanks largely to the fact that we practically all knew someone older who was working on Thatcher's building sites, and they always returned home at christmas with cassettes - Morgan Khan's streetsounds, Kiss FM and the rest. When hip hop became trendy, then a joke, and then mainstream in the 90s, most of us had settled into whatever aspect of the elements we were most comfortable with, but had moved on. Still it was a genuine subculture of the estates and outskirts, visible to the rest of the population only on saturday afternoons in town and city centres. Much respect to The Dizzy Footwork Crew, wherever they are now. Those Nike suits were 1984's confirmation money for many of us kids. The new ones are a pale imitation.

DJ Laz-e recently pulled out some of the ancient snaps he had from back in the 80s, took a look at them, and decided to create a Myspace page for D22's Team City Rockers.

These photos were once all archived online, along with those of as many of the other old school crews who could contribute, on the web resource hiphopireland.com ( NOT to be confused with Keyo's long-running H2Eire resource ); the former is now, alas, lost somewhere in the ether, along with all of the photographs, video and audio material. Ah well.

Dublin City is covered in a blanket of snow this morning, picture postcard perfect but a month too late for sentimentalists. Still, it feels more like christmas right now than it did in December - probably coz it looks like it looks on telly. I didn't get into the swing of it at all last year, unlike our Goldy, who really went for it. Setting himself the insane task of putting together The Twelve Mixtapes Of Christmas, somehow he cracked it. He says he hasn't listened back to them yet himself, so expect randomness. He's also kindly zipped them all together in the form of an easily digestible Selection Box you can grab HERE. So, throw it on, crack open a bottle of Baileys, light that fire and stare out at the Lapland Tourist Board's wet dream outside your window. Tell the boss you're sick, he's only going to give you the bullet in a couple of months anyway.

All City Dublin Writers Exhibition

This wednesday, head down to All City Records for the first of a series of exhibitions of the work of two of Dublin's most prolific writers...so you can probably guess who.
There will be canvases + wall paintings plus some photography by Chewie.

Please note - Wednesday is over 18s - the exhibition will be open downstairs for a week after..
