Dublin DJ and all-round nice guy Johnny Illanja of the Assquake crew has done a nice selection for the ToeJam blog - much niceness including one from current smokeless favourite Julio Bashmore and the house monster 'Badman Riddim' among others. For a full tracklist and more, go HERE.
"Something interesting is brewing on the fringes of dubstep, and 24-year-old Rob Kemp, better known as Brackles, is right in the thick of it....."
The second Standard night is finally upon us - join us this saturday night in the Melody Bar, 122 Capel Street Dublin 1 for none other than Brackles, whose productions and mixing skills have blown many of us away this last year. After the fun we had with El-b and Rolla, we're really looking forward to reigniting saturday nights in Dub City, and promise you a night of quality music and good vibes - the Standard Crew will all be in attendance, along with guest Don Rosco. Doors open 10.30, its ten euro on the door but their are concessionary flyers doing the rounds all over the city center, so keep an eye out.
ps Because of the gig, this saturday's Standard Radio show will be a repeat. Normal service will resume next week.
DJ PCP was away last night, and let us cover his show along with our own, resulting in a three hour session down at Raidio Na Life. As a result this week's transmission is in two parts, which you can hear/download below. It kicks off with about 30 minutes each from me, Don Rosco ( who'll be joining us next saturday night for Standard 2 in The Melody Bar with our special guest - none other than Brackles ) and Sub One, then its back to back business from the three of us, fininshing as promised with a little set from Major Grave. Excuse the odd skippy needle, crackly fader and mumbling.

Tonight we're back on Raidio Na Life from 9pm GMT. Myself and Sub One will be rolling out the usual, and we have some special guests; fresh from Joker's gig last night we'll have Don Rosco in the studio helping us out with the vinyl selection, and there are rumours of a live set from Major Grave somewhere in there too.. We're 106.4 on the FM for those in the greater Dublin area.

For anyone outside Dublin, you can check the livestream.
United Vibes are a crew to be admired in many ways, not least for the fact that the lads are currently celebrating ten years together. Vibezin and Amen-Ra's weekly show on Sub FM, and the productions of the extended LHF family have always been about ignoring or breaking boundaries. A consistent crew, they're marking the decade with a series of mixes -
Part 1: 97-99 2-step garage
Part 2: Millenium 2-step
Part 3: Dubstep History Mix 2
Part 4: In-house productions
So lots to look forward to then, plus a 4x4 garage mix once these are up. Part 1 can be heard/downloaded below. And Happy 10th Anniversary!

Had he been alive today, Phillip Lynott would be celebrating his 60th. The finest musical export we've seen these last 30 years, and the only one deserving of a memorial. While we're remembering him today, let us not forget Ireland's best breakbeat ever. Any self respecting Dublin DJ has this on double. RIP agus breithlá shone duit.
The ever generous Micky of Naked Lunch has thrown a short and sweet mix up for your listening pleasure - apparently mixed for Steve according to the filename, whoever he may be. Have a listen or download it below.
Also make sure you check his mix for Sonic Router and his interview/mix on RA. Check around for more of his selections, and keep an ear out for new rumblings from the label if you like what you hear.

REACH DJ, creator of many's a tasty flyer and one half of Dublin's Don Rosco + Stacks Show, the man known as Stacks is back with another new one, first in a while too; a deep and rolling number. Check it below.
We played this one last week, a simple but wonky Grime rhythm by Major Grave and Konspiracy. It's really grown on me since then. Would love to hear Rí Rá spit over it.
If you ask me who is my favourite producer, you may get a different answer on a daily basis. Whenever I listen to Terror Danjah however, I swear blind it's him. 'Gremlinz' drops next month.
August continues to be a good month for sessions (if not for weather) as this friday coming Wobble presents Joker. This will be Liam's second time on these shores, and his Dublin debut. 10e on the door.
Tonight we're back on Raidio Na Life from 9pm GMT, and it should be a good one, as this week it's myself going back to back with Sub One, Konspiracy and DJ Halfdutch - so expect some vintage garage vinyl and a few surprises.
You can text the show on (+353)0866001064, or tweet HERE.

Cooly G getting some notice on the other side of the world on this mix for MTV Brazil; all dubplates from herself more or less - deep and dubby all the way.
Here's the first weekly broadcast from the Standard fam - me, Bob and Sam going back to back, and managing to eat, drink chat and roll as we went. The tracklist is probably going to be a little slower in appearing this week but bear with us, some nice dubs in there from Major Grave ('Make Money' and his collaboration with Konspiracy, 'Imperial'). We'll be back next saturday at the same time with Halfdutch joining in on the mayhem. Excuse the predictable techies/teething issues, things can only get better...

Just awaiting a couple of confirmations from the lads...
Myself and DJ Halfdutch have been sharing the 9pm saturday slot on Raidio Na Life since the start of the year, but we're switching things up tomorrow night. From now on the show will be known as Standard ('Caighdeán' for native tongues) and will feature the Standard crew every saturday night - myself, Konspiracy and Halfdutch will keep it rolling, so keep locked in.
Tomorrow night its myself and Sub, Konspiracy and Major Grave to kick things off, from 9pm GMT till 10.30 (too short really)...
You can text the show on (+353)0866001064, or tweet HERE.

I've been meaning to get on this one since I heard it, so I started it tonight. Here's the results so far, just loops really, no eq'ing or much else yet, and i need to redo the bass on some more sophistcated kit than Acid. Hopefully the lads don't mind me taking the liberty.
I've been meaning for some time now to find more of the music I'd been working on when I was most prolific, sometime between 96 and 99 when my S2000 was almost new and the familiar two-tone interface of cubase compact was enough to get started. I found some last week, fecked into a cardboard box that once contained my Tannoys, buried under three decades of unmarked musical storage - ie cassettes. When I finally graduated to the digital age after a misspent youth on turntables and tape edits, ironically the only format I could record on was good old C90s, as a standalone CDR cost a hell of a lot back then( as did memory, not to mention a computer capable of doing the donkey work). But, tapes were cheap, so excuse the appalling sound quality on some of these.
Another issue (this is fast becoming a disclaimer) is that these tunes were never finished or mixed properly, just straight out of the sampler via cheap and nasty cables and into some 3-in-one midi system murk. Only ever really played to mates, who politely listened and offered encouragement, while waiting for me to shut up and pass it back.
'Musique'
This first one, 'Musique' came from a cassette marked '1999' so that's all I can really tell you. Oh, and the obvious sampling of the Kling Klang boys.
'Final Frontier'
This one is your generic Ravi Shankar meets Bill Shatner with a little Incredible Bongo Band sprinkled throughout. I still quite like the drum programming towards the end.
'Live Your Life'
Liberal use of acapella on 'Live Your Life', not a tune as such, more an excuse to do a Hip Hop rhythm at a time when I was well beyond dissillusioned. I fiddled with a bass guitar to create the barely audible b-line.
'Abstract'
This is a wierd one. It survived the transition from tape more than the previous ones. Like many of these, it goes on a lot longer than necessary. Some kind of abstract darkage. Must have been winter.
'Stalker'
There's another version of this on the 1998 Liveset I posted a while back. This is where the thing originated.
'Nowhere'
'Nowhere' is mindless thump-stepping drum and bass - Grizzle had given me some Rhodes multis so I stayed up all night, made this, and committed it to tape. When I switched the power off, the data would be lost forever, and the tape would be thrown into the box with the rest, standard.
'Again'
Here's a final ear shredding and over resonant demo from another dusty tape. At this stage you may recognise repetition of samples throughout. Let's call them signatures or something.
I reckon that's enough self indulgence and shameless self-promotion for a self that doesn't exist anymore, for now at least. With a few more demons exorcised, its time to make some new music again.
We got back from London last night, returning to grimy Dublin jaded but invigorated; friday night at Matter was quite crazy, packed to the rafters it was like a cross between the Sir Henry's raves of old and Victoria station at rush hour. The crowd swarmed in a constant flux between rooms and floors, sometimes dragging us along. We arrived as Magnetic Man were bashing it out, with Benga on the mic enquiring 'who wants some technoooo?' to which I replied - not me thanks very much.
The hectic nature of events meant that we missed some of what we wanted to hear, and caught some we didn't particularly care for. The highlights for me were (as expected) Ms Dynamite working the crowd into a frenzy, and Boy Better Know putting on a show of pure energy and entertainment the likes of which I rarely see. Check the evidence below courtesy of Butterz
We only discovered the delights of room 2 as Crazy Cousinz were finishing their set, and as Caspa came on we decided to call it a night.
The real fun came on sunday at FWD>>. I think its fair to say that the four of us who made the trip loved every minute of it, as Scratcha, Oneman, Zinc, Tubby, Benga(playing a sweet garage set) threw down tunes we love and rarely hear out at home, and Sir Spyro absolutely smacked the living shit out of it with a deft quick mix that gave us the energy required to make it up the road for some ckfck? or whatever chicken before bed.
Anyway, as I was away on Saturday, DJ Halfdutch did the usual stint on our radio jobshare. We'd been talking about the show last week, and where to take it - before I got my nike airs in the door, she had been doing the show every saturday night for the last seven years - and we've hit upon the obvious.
Seeing as we finally have a night to play this stuff out in Dublin, and a tight crew of DJ's/producers with a common love and enthusiasm for what we do, why not join the dots? So, from this saturday night the 9pm to 10.30 slot(just not long enough, but you take what you can get) gets a name - Standard.
The show will be run by the Standard crew, so myself, Halfdutch, Sub One and Konspiracy will be sharing the show on a weekly basis - some weeks it may be one of us, some weeks all of us, some weeks local heroes - either way the sound of saturday nights on 106.4 FM will be the sound of the club.
Speaking of the club, last saturday in August sees the man like Brackles coming over to join us, and we're going to throw a party in The Melody Bar between now and then for anyone who missed the first and has a spare fiver to help us finance it. Yeah, we're broke. If we weren't we'd be back over in LDN for this one....
So, here's the final broadcast from the show in its current form from last Saturday night, DJ Halfdutch rolling out the garage + funky plus more. I've a funny feeling everyone's going to be down the studio this saturday, so lock in if you can and shout us if you're feeling it. Don't be put off by the lingo if you don't speak Irish - please get in touch wherever you are.
