Mantua Festival - Alphabet Set Stage Lineup

Well, despite my Phestival Phobia, the unseasonal(at this stage) July sunshine has added some optimism to the idea of heading to a large turf bog in Roscommon for the August bank holiday weekend. Plus, myself and Grizzle are playing the final set on Friday night, so its a great excuse to get out there.

Thankfully, I took a week off work so myself and Griz will be working on our set from now till thursday, and that includes creating a few more tracks, so its going to be a few all nighters. Anyway, here's the lineup for The Alphabet Set Stage,

Ghost 'n' Jay 'Straight 'n' Direct(Dub)'

A couple of years back..

Here's my track that went on to be 'Straight'n'Direct' from 2006's Ghost 'n' Jay EP. This instrumental version would have been recorded as a demo half way through the process, and so is very rough around the edges.

Grizzle Exclusive Bootleg

I was banging on about this bootleg by Grizzle to a lot of folks in the real world, so its about time I upped it. Love this one.

Going Way Back Into Time

Those were the days...thanks to Rabbi

Thats How we Livin'

Ante Up!

Rusko Aftermath

Rusko Banton

It was a damn sweaty Saturday night last out west, in the company of Rusko. He played a more varied set than he's usually given credit for, along with his own dubs for which he's received both ends of the opinion spectrum. In fact, he fucking killed it dead.

Gettin Into It

The sound was (mostly) sweet, a last minute dash got a cdj for Rusko who'd had half his dubs robbed recently from his bag. Nasty. All the sets went down well, I even managed to clear the floor at one stage by dropping a couple of Grime tracks, but nonetheless the crowd soon weaved their way back, and seemed open and eager for what they were hearing, as although there was definitely a crowd there specifically for the music, many would have been hearing most of the records that were played for the first time. And it went off.

Lowkey and Me

There wasn't a dry t shirt in the house by the end, and the people who turned out got what they needed at a time of virtually nothing else going on bar the festivals. Big shout to the Dubs who came down especially for the gig, Rusko and his missus who were sound as a pound, and of course the man himself who kept us entertained on and off the turntables. Big thanks to the Get Low crew once again for lookin after us, and a big bow down to Galway's finest White Widow ;)

Satisfied punters

I'll throw up some better photos when I get em...

Rusko @Get Low

Any Dublin Heads interested get on the bus....

There's many's a good moan on the dubstepforum, which has of late had quiet, more shy readers like myself scrambling off elsewhere to escape the increasingly inane banter and pointless debates...pretty similar to what happened over at the once very useful resource H2éire many years ago.....(but nowhere near as arse clenchingly embarassing as that creche. Please, don't visit. It aint funny anymore)

One major fuel behind the moan engines has to be Rusko. Love or hate him, its yours. Fact is he does his own unique thing, and does it well. He'll be doing it for the first time in Ireland next Saturday in Galway, and its guaranteed to be a stormer. Not to be missed....
Keep an ear out for a possible 'Cockney Thug/Amhráin na bhFiann' mashup.

Life Festival Highlights

Try as I might, and I might, I just can't get excited about Festivals. Every Summer, someone or other informs me how much I'm missing out, how good the last one was, and how they can't wait for the next one. That's no problem, its more the look of absolute horror and shock on their faces when I express my indifference to them. It's generally the look you'd expect to receive on admitting you love to eat live kittens.

Great craic no doubt

Its just a personal choice folks, so relax. I'll always associate festivals with my youth, with my memories, with old friends, warm tins, LSD, Gardaí, and such and such. I can't separate them in my mind from those times, so I will avoid them today as I avoid Blue Stratos aftershave, and any other things from that time I no longer require. The Life Festival just didn't draw my arse out into the rain last weekend. In fact this particular festival would be the absolute nadir of musical enjoyment for me. Its always presented itself as a hair braiding, face painting, fire juggling sanctuary of new-age-shite-talking meets early-90s-trance-hell.

This year however, they reached out to people like me with some more diverse artists. Here the living legend Max Romeo who I always try and catch when he's in Dublin...

...and Mala...(more Max Romeo on this one by Coki as it goes...)

...and a bit of Skream.

Photos and more to come soon from Get Low who apparently stormed it before Mala and Skream....
Oh, and Big Up Breakology....

Grievous Angel

"Bear in mind that at the time, late 2007, there really was a rash of bad wobble tracks and the more housey gear was only just getting released," says Grievous Angel. "It was clear that we needed to do something to stop the soul element being wiped out of dubstep too. It wasn't about revivalism. It was about bringing out the original forms of dubstep, the Horsepower, Landslide, Roots of Dubstep side out. 2-step beats at 140 bpm with bigger bass and subtle wobble-- wobble that means something."

Martin Clark's very incisive and heartening interview with Grievous Angel in Pitchfork. Read the full article HERE.

Ghost 'n' Jay Instrumentals ( 2004 )

Ghost 'n' Jay way back

Here are some instrumentals I did for Dublin Hip Hop legends Ghost'n'Jay(above) in 2004. They were never finished as tracks so these are just the bare rhythmic bones of what were to be possible tracks for the album we never got done, probably due in no small part to the demands of fatherhood and work on the bwais. The first one is called 'Some More' and was originally going to be a scratch track with minimal MCing as far as I remember...

The next one is just a simple loop, nameless as it was going to form the basis of a skit, so its nice and short....

This one was known as 'Nowhere to Hide' and was a proper full on MC tune. I like the drunken step to the rhythm. So there.

And the final one is one I did for the lads but knew myself it was too kinky for the kind of stuff the lads were doing, its called 'Scrambled'.

Colz 'Down'

Another from the vaults, a demo I did in 1998 which grabbed the attention of Jack L's people at the time, who were looking to 'update' their sound at the end of the 90s. Needless to say, they never updated anything, including my bank account, so I nicked their S2000 from the studio. I felt sorry for the poor muso deludo who actually owned it, and gave it back to him eventually, after much explanation of his personal financial problems and starving childer. The cunts never gave me my money though, so if you see any of their unlistenable muck on the shelves of your local pop shop, rob it, bring it outside and smash it. Should put a wee dent in their hair gel fund.

DJ Colz, DJ SavWar, DJ Moschops Scratchin'

Lo and behold, another recording, this time from 2004 and a Scratch Session in my gaff with Myself, Moschops and Savwar on a 1210 each, just fiddlin' with faders. If you like scratchy noise, have a listen.

Colz 'Clack' / 'Tea Leaf' / 'Tribute' 2001

I've been digging through old CD's with 'demo' scrawled on them, looking for interesting tidbits. I found these three, all from 2001 so the same period as 'Stoney Park' and two of them heavily influenced by the UKG sounds of the time that myself and Grizzle were somehow picking up from London. They aren't 'tracks' by any stretch, just repeating structured demo type shit. The first one, which I have just now named 'Clack' starts off four to the floor, and sounds nice and cheap if you know what I mean.

The next one has been christened 'Tea Leaf' because I think i straight thieved the beat before choppytime.

The third one is called 'Tribute' and was just myself and my mate Rink messing about and smoking for a few hours. Rink doesn't make music but he loves Reggae. So, its a Dub track but were really overdoing it on the delays and reverbs so listener discretion is advised. The melody (on melodica) was later used in my Warning Remix. Mind your ears.

Erykah Badu 01/07/2008

But it isn't all doom and gloom...yet. This week I went to one of the best gigs I've seen in Dubland for a while, courtesy of Erykah Badu. A hell of a show, with many's an auld favourite from the analogue girl herself, along with newer material from her new stormer of an album. Here's a few clips uploaded to YouTube by various punters, they're of varying sound quality so beware. Check YouTube for more footage as it emerges, this was one big session. Big Up the lady herself for getting close to the crowd at the end...

Malaise Forever

What's the feckin' craic here? Did someone switch HAARP on?

It's looking set to be a new pattern for summer in Ireland; a couple of optimistic weeks in April and May when the sun peeks through the advancing Atlantic clouds, the pale skins prickle and tan, and mná na héireann start to take on the look of fertile goddesses....and then it pisses it down for the next two months.

After last years cack-fest of a summer, I reckoned that it must have been a blip. Sitting here drenched again now its looking pretty grim.

The Burger King's Return - An Omen?

As if that wasn't enough, the country itself is returning to its more familiar form as an economic basket case. The land we grew up in is back, but its a little different. Fair enough, the youngfella's have mullets and highlights, tuck their trackies into their socks and wear cheap jewellery, but don't fret. The 1980s have not returned as such, but... Back then we had a 'third world economy' (as it used to be known), where the state owed billions to other governments. This time around, YOU owe the billions. Fuck.

But like many who grew up in the 70s and 80s in Dublin, I do have that dewy eyed nostalgia for certain aspects of those tougher times. NOT this aspect....a little reminder of the post-80s pre-tiger slumpage...

....but just the auld nod in the street to everyone you passsed, where did that go?... and the grey market, its never been as good as it was back then.... and
possibly Troop trackies.

So with all this talk of a return to the 80s, and this shite weather, all it would take for me now to be whisked back to them days would be the aroma of a week old banana at the bottom of a wet canvas schoolbag, with the Inspector Gadget theme as backing track. Crappy days they were, particularly when it came to musical tings. I remember going to see U2 back then in Croke Park in 86 or 87, because there was fuck all else to do. They were fucking awful.

Last year I managed to escape for a few weeks to the sun, but this year things are tight. Stuck is the word. I'm still sort of glad I own fuck all in this country but my records, my electronics and my clothes. In 2008, owning is owing.
