DJ Colz August 08 Selection

Ah well, its that time again. Nearly the end of summer already, not that you'd realise much of a difference in Ireland. Floods, rain, beautiful grey skies, and more rain. Many of us are hoping for an Indian summer, just a few weeks in september is all we ask to be able to fire up the bbq for once... Anyway, here's this months mix - some old 2step to begin as I just can't resist, alongside some classics and brand new ones that are putting a smile on me face. Enjoy responsibly.

The Infomatics 'Back To Front'

Thats better. 'Back To Front' is Out Now.

Duuuuuuuuuuu-blinnnnnn

Accents are strange things at the best of times, with the Dublin/Naija examples above owing more than a little debt to The Great Satan. Same goes for the native Paddy type below though.

Wasn't this scourge eradicated in the 80s? The Brits had the sense to purge the mid-atlantic accent from national radio back then, but you'll still find it on the radio and TV in Ireland. Perhaps its provided the fertile soil for new mutations of TuPac and Tallaght, making it (somehow) acceptable enough to be proudly posted on YouTube so fuckers like me can bemoan what once was music. This has been a shocking development brewing among the youts these last years. The virus seems stronger than ever, dog. Y'knowwamsayin?

Bleahh.

Not to mention everyone's favourite bingo caller. All the MC skills of a fried banana. There are infinitely
more 'rappers' and less MCs than there were 15 years back. You can count these Irish MCs on one hand, with a couple of fingers thrown in(on a good day). Today is not a good day.

Rain makes me ANGRY.

Melodica Deathship Sets Sail

The Black Tea Bubbling Tour is travelling across Ireland this coming week promoting the pre-release of the Melodica Deathship Volume One ep. The tour features Melodica Deathship and Devon Drounz, projects of true school Irish hip hop vets Exile Eye and Troubled Soul.

The melodica deathship is a combination of rugged beats, ghostly melodica, and salty lyrical themes Inspired by a dark fascination with the sea. Imagine The Pogues, Augustus Pablo, King Tubby and El P making a dubbed out racket in the hull of a galleon bound for hell...and you're getting there...
Check the exclusive instrumental dub of '1803' below for an example of the Deathship sound...

More Mantua

June 2008, and Original Junglists RickyForce and SafetyBoy in session with MC Rungus at the Black Box, Galway City, for the launch of this years' Mantua Festival. The sheer size of the place is apparent, but its always nice to see de young people doin' the high speed bogle.

Also in attendance at the launch party was Ireland's premier sound Rootical Soundsystem, and here's some footage from their tent at the festival itself....

And finally, just one of the bizarre aspects of Ireland's friendliest festival - the now infamous Holy Hour. For those of you that weren't there, the music had to stop for an hour for Mass in the local Church. Only in Ireland... or possibly the Phillipines.

More to come no doubt...

Immediate Sounds Vol 1

Here's another great selection, and this one even comes with a concept - Carribean Rave Music. Mixed by Gabriel Heatwave and Ben Dubstar to promote their new night, Immediate Sounds, its a half hour mix outlining the type of sounds you can expect if you're lucky enough to live nearby(I'm not) - so plenty Garage, Jungle and Funky, 'filtered through the tasty carnival vibes of bashment and soca' as they put it.

Spliffman Funky Mix Vol 1

A great Funky selection from the mysterious Spliffman, this mix is without a tracklisting so far, but its got a lot of the usual suspects on it. Unfortunately, it also has an annoying judder between tracks, so the mix isn't smooth but you should get the idea.

K3Bee 'Dark Whisper'

More Irish sounds now in the form of Limerick's K3bee of The Nu Killa Crew. Called 'Dark Whisper', its a deep and techy one. If you like what you hear, check his other productions on his Virb page.

Beckett 'Donations'

Belfast DJ / Producer Beckett has put together a mini-album of recent productions, 'Donations', up for download on his virb page. Spanning the tempo ranges of House, Dubstep and D'n'B, here's the track 'True' to give you a flavour.

Crysis 'Flux Capacitor'

Crysis at Mantua

A brand new one here from Crysis of Galway crew Get Low. A dark and dirty grind of a track, and hopefully forthcoming on their new label DubCulture. This sucker is Nuclear.

Paleface feat Kyla 'Do You Mind'

An undeniable summer anthem from Paleface, remixed by Crazy Cousinz, and featuring the vocal talents of Kyla, this track has been stuck in my head these last couple of months. I think the worse the weather gets the more I need this sound.

Floor Masters '86 Style

Not Quite Terminator

Bassbin 10th Birthday

From back in October 2006, some nice footage from Bassbin's 10th Birthday Rave-Up at Traffic in Dublin. Many a familiar face in the well-up for it crowd...'Unoffical Ghost' into 'Metropolis' as well, two tunes I used to rinse to death many moons ago...nice.

Konspiracy AKA DJ Bob

One DJ set I really enjoyed at The Mantua Festival was on the friday in the Low End Tent, courtesy of Konspiracy.

It was the first time I'd heard him playing out and was well impressed. Konspiracy, along with Major Grave, Johnny Oakley, and 16Hz, represent the younger and very much up and coming face of DJs and Producers in Dublin working within the 140(ish)bpm range. Following in the footsteps of the elders(Grizzle, Don Rosco, T-Woc, Stacks, Safetyboy, A-Force and others who've been pushing the sound in Ireland) they're definitely carrying the torch.
Enjoy.....

Tracklist

Damien Dempsey - It's All Good

Singer - feckin' - songwriters. Normally they leave me cold - and God knows we have a glut of the whingeing, self-obsessed poseurs in this city. In fact, the only way the media will take any notice of Irish music is if its dressed up in the Georges Street Arcade uniform of the pretentious wannabe troubador; misty eyed, pale and angsty sells.
This point of view was challenged for me in 2003 when I saw this documentary on RTE. You'll either love him or hate him, but you can't deny the man.

Large Hadron Rap

Wondering what the hell is going on under Switzerland? Worried about CERN's Large Hadron Collider causing a doomsday scenario along the lines of Desmond turning the fail safe key in The Swan Dharma Station? Here are the CERN staff to reassure you. I presume they paid James Brown's estate for the 'Think' break....

10K For Me, 10K For Davey Boy

From RTE News:

'An English pipe fitter who was racially abused in his Irish workplace has been awarded €20,000 in compensation.

The man, who worked for an engineering company on a Dublin building site, claimed colleagues called him names and frequently ganged-up on him to sing Irish rebel songs.

Some workers never spoke to him and whenever staff had to enter tanks or dangerous spaces they would say 'send the Brit in' to make the way safe.
'

I had a quick chat with my workmate Dave this morning as I was finishing the night shift, and he was beginning the morning shift. Dave is a true-blue SE14, London born and bred geezer who was lured to this island a few years ago by the love of a cailín deas ó Baile átha Cliath, so I wanted to get his angle on what is a first for Anglo-Irish relations. It didn't take us long to decide a plan of action - starting next week I'll be raving about 800 years of occupation and genocide, ranting about the Queen, and singing the entire Wolfe Tones back catalogue at the top of my voice. Ten grand for Dave, ten grand for me, and all I'll have to worry about is being fired. Its our own little Anglo-Irish Agreement.

Gemmy 'BK 2 The Future / Bass Transmitter'

Without doubt one of my favourite producers at the moment is Gemmy. What is it with Bristol? Is there something special in the water over there? Anyway, finally he has a 12 coming out soon on Punch Drunk, a label whose releases get most of the heads I know (this side of the wet divide) very excited. This one will be no exception...Punch Drunk009 will feature 'BK 2 The Future' and 'Bass Transmitter', two tracks I cant get out of my head lately. Check them HERE.

The vinyl will be out in September. In the meantime, whet your greedy hunger with another Gemmy production, 'BT Tower' (below).

Mantua Time

Here's a little bit of my set at The Mantua Festival last week, uploaded by Lisadal. He/she promises more uploads soon, so if any come along I'll throw them up in here.

JohnnyAlpha recorded the whole thing (audio anyway), so as soon as he gets it to me I'll fire it up for download. Out to everyone who enjoyed it.

Homeland

A documentary series on Dublin in the 1990s by American Director Daryl grant. Filmed on the cusp of the economic boom, and with more than a little yankee rose-tint on the lens, already the city and the attitudes seem far far away and fadó fadó.

DJ Mek - Newcleus

And the man like Mek just rockin' back and forth on 'Push The Button' by Newcleus. No tricks - just precision cutting.

DJ Savwar 2005

Here's one of Savwar's ITF Scratch Sets from 2005. I managed to catch his set at Mantua, first time I've seen the bwai at work in a couple of years...very nice.

DJ Control 1991

Many thanks to Micksacro for uploading this footage of the '91 Irish DMCs. Many recognisable heads in the (wilding out) crowd...I was hovering down the back somewhere. Big Up DJ Control, one of the scene leaders way back in Dublin.

DJ Mayhem Beat Juggle

Dublin's own DJ Mayhem rocking an old ITF juggle routine. I always thought he was the big talent in Creative Control, and its good to see he's still knocking out his own quality productions on his MySpace.

More Mayhem video HERE.

The Vapors Movie

Yes folks, a movie is on the way about the legendary Juice Crew, a story familiar to all us bus pass holders. Will it kick off like The Bridge Wars? Can we expect a movie response from The Boogie Down? Will Juice Crew Diss be on the soundtrack?.....

Turbo and The Broom

Fuck It.

I just had to post this. Memories of sitting around the VCR with a pirate copy with my mates, studying every move while being subliminally educated on the music of Kraftwerk. I get a strong emotional memory rush just watching this clip, we must have watched the movie a thousand times back then. I hadn't seen it in over two decades until today, so I'm sure you can imagine. So, cheesefest and all that it is, this evening I'm going to settle back, stick it on and sob into the sofa as I lament my LOST YOOF.

Leeroy bambaataa 'Bass Degenerator Mix'

About time we got an old school mix up in here, and our man in Inverness Leeroy Bambaataa has stepped up to the plate. A definite soundtrack to my youth, its a 100% vinyl cut and paste electro / hip hop mix, featuring many of the old favourites including Afrika Bambaataa, Kraftwerk, Hijack, Hashim, C.O.D, Chris "The Glove" Taylor feat. Ice-T amongst others, with a touch of adult humour from the one and only Andrew Dice Clay thrown in for good degenerate measure.I know a lot of the heads in Dublin have been enjoying this mix of late, if you haven't checked it yet you can do so below...

Drippin' Wet With Sauce It's So Appealin'.....

Next time you're stuck in Gorey Co Wexford, RIPTAS Kebab House would love your custom.
Autotune never sounded so off key.
